badscienceblogs.net is ready to go

Post by bengoldacre » Fri Sep 21, 2007 7:02 pm

okay we have a blog aggregating site to build, to suck in all the headlines for all the posts you are going to be writing on your new blogs

this will die without action, dweebs.

we need:

1. you to start a blog.

2. one person to act as coordinator for the build and first while

3. one person who can build the site (few hours work)

4. some people to admin it on a rolling basis, accept new blogs etc. mildly geeky but mostly fun communidy work.

nb i dont have time to do any of this, without you it will die.

geek stuff:

we should use wordpress - since that supports multiple authors/admins, is versatile, can allow lots of new stuff to be added, lots of nice themes ready built, lots of people know how to use it etc

we can use these tools to convert rss feeds to posts:

http://www.kristambaker.com/2007/08/13/ ... ggregator/

someone needs to work out which is the best

excitement:

here is the site, ready to go:

http://www.badscienceblogs.net/

work on this thing. it will look good on your cv. depending on, er, what kind of job you want. or indeed already have.

bit late in psoting here but think this is a *smashing* idea. The power of blogging is proving remarkable. We can make or break sites just by wrting about them. Check out a google search for 'patrick holford'.

If anyone intends to write about quackery, please make sure I know and you will be added to my quackoblogosphere. This sucks in rss feeds, then checks if the posts are about quackery, then automatically produces a blogroll.

And what do links mean?

Prizes.

We are on the verge of producing something very powerful here that can be a real challenge to bad science, quackery and fraudsters. No one else is doing it. Why can't we?
On the Internet, nobody knows you're a quack.

http://www.crwebtools.com/auto_rss_importer.php

This one would be a problem to admin -- it needs file-editing to add or change what feeds it imports. I guess that could be changed with a little hacking but it wouldn't be nice.

http://projects.radgeek.com/feedwordpress

This one allows any registered admin to edit feeds. Much nicer. It uses a category of links from your WordPress database to store them -- I'm not sure how they appear on your screen but I think they look like the "contributors" list on http://feministblogs.org/ -- they're doing much the same thing as we want to do by the look of it.

Edit: I don't know if the links would be to the blog or the feed. Might need a little hacking. It'd be a pain to setup but it looks like it can do the job and do it well.

I think someone will have to test them out, but my money's on FeedWordPress. Looks like a harder install, but once it's on it'd be much easier to use.

i think these plugins will require a standalone wordpress install on a server, not a wordpress.comblog, no? anyone willing to test out the plugins a report back on which one is usable?

These must be relatively rare examples of blogs which got started after the users found they had something to say.

Anyway, while someone works out how to get badscienceblogs.net going I've reorganized shpalman.livejournal.com to have links on it.

All too rare I reckon! It's an interesting problem in number theory, there are an infinite number of blogs where you want to punch the banal, vacuous authors in the face an infinite number of times, so how many punches is that?

I'll also be joining the fray ASAP :D

I had a go at installing AutoRSSImporter and it didn't work. I might try to fix it later, but here's a blog that uses FeedWordPress to import all of Ben's miniblog items:

http://apathysketchpad.com/stuff/unlisted/wp1/

It updates them whenever you visit this page:

http://apathysketchpad.com/stuff/unlist ... -feeds.php

This can be automated using CRON (which someone with admin access to the server would have to do) or it can be done with pings (which the individual bloggers would ahve to set up) or else it can be done manually by people with too much time on their hands (or automatically by someone whose computer stays on 24/7 and could access that page every hour or two).

The admin account's username is "admin" and the password is "badsci" so you can all have a play with it and get a feel.

I think that's pretty good. I vote for FeedWordPress.

thats bl..dy good work andrewtaylor

if it needs a cron job thats a drag ish because i was hoping to run this from my powweb space (where i can do multiple domain mapping to my one account but have less server access for eg cron jobs) and not the positive internet server where we have total control but no automated domain mapping stuff.

if there is a way of doing it without cron jobs then that's great, if not i'll have to find a way to do the monstrous complicated domain mapping stuff on the positive server (just means begging a tech favour off either them or the mighty alexlomas.com , cleverest admin in the universe)

I suppose there's no particular reason why the cron job would have to be run from the same server the blog is hosted from. A wget command ought to be able to do the job from a different one. Might be possible to have the Positive server remind the powweb one to update that way.

OK chaps, the new Extraordinary Claims blog is now live. Its got links and everything.

I'll need some help with the fancy shmancy stuff - hitherto I have tended to reject doing things that don't involve hand coding the html in notepad. So all this new fangled tuff will be a bit beynd me for a bit.

Ben, you promised me readers and mates. I've never had any mates. So I'm eager to find out what its like.

Here's my effort:

http://beyondthesecondlaw.wordpress.com/

I've eased myself into the world of blogging with a nice soft target just to get the site up (climate change denialist who can't even read his own sources!)

More ideas and articles coming in short order.

What do I do regarding stuff like RSS feeds etc, and do others set the comments to registered only or just let any fruitcakes post?

With livejournal I have the option of letting anyone post, but comments from unregistered entities get emailed to me for moderation.

What's wrong with hand coding the html? Remember you can upload files to the validator to check that they aren't broken.

Well you seem to have an atom feed, which ought to work with feedwordpress.

I think you should tag posts for badscienceblog with a "badscience" tag so that the feed can be filtered.

thanks, but you might have to go even further back to basics. do i have to install feedword press? looks complex, i have no idea what i'm doing. on my blogger settings, i have a box that says "Post Feed Redirect URL" is there a url already set up to forward all our blogs to, or do we have to use feedword press? confused...!!

to save everyone else on the thread the boredom of me getting a lesson in how to work teh interweb, perhaps you (and not just shpalman, don't want to trouble just one of you super-geeks out there!) could PM me advice, or are other folks here struggling too...?!

No, I don't think so: I'm assuming that someone is going to set up feedwordpress will run on the badscienceblogs.net site and read the Atom/RSS feeds which all our blogs already have. You don't really need to do anything apart from put tags on your posts.
